Need some exotic animals help?

I am writing an modern adaption of the Sherlock Holmes story "The Speckled Band" and a character owns a cheetah, baboon and poisonous snake. How can I write into the story about these since I don't think you're allowed to own one? Are there any loopholes I could use? Thanks :)
