What crochet stitch should i use?

A simple single or double crochet stitch would be fine done with a bulky yarn. If you work into the back of each loop you will get a thicker thermal look rather than a flat piece. I wouldn't make it too big because the larger ones can be difficult to wash and dry, so I would make more of a lapghan size about 36" x 42".
