Places to see in Vietnam?

I'm hoping to get the train from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh and I'm wondering where abouts would be good to stop off on the way, im hoping to take about 10-12 days with this and I really want to get off the beaten track even if i have to take a couple of days off the train and travel into the bush!!
